About Ruwan Ranatunga

Ruwan Ranatunga was born on 20th of October 1971 in Udugampola in the Western province to Mr. and Mrs. Ranatunga as the youngest of a family of six. He received a Buddhist education at Asokha College, Colombo and there was when religious values and rich Sri Lankan culture inculcated deep inside his heart. Later on, he signed up to Ananda College Colombo, for his secondary education. Ruwan Ranatunga was one of the top Anadianas in his batch with outstanding performance in both academic and extra-curricular activities.

Upon the completion of his secondary education, he graduated from a foreign university in the field of Business Administration. After returning to the motherland, Ruwan Ranatunga ventured into a successful business and today he is the Head of the organization.


Family Background

His beloved father late Regi Ranatunga, was one of the most colourful and outstanding political leaders ever produced by mother Lanka who served the country as a District Parliament Minister representing Gampaha district, a Deputy Cabinet Minister, a Cabinet Minister and a Governor. Nayana Nandani Ranatunga who was his mother was a great teacher loved by thousands of students all over the island. Ruwan Ranatunga has five elder brothers namely, Dammika Ranatunga, Arjuna Ranatunga, Nishantha Ranatunga, Prasanna Ranatunga and Sanjeewa Ranatunga.

Dammika Ranatunga was a former Sri Lankan Cricket player and currently, he is the Chairman of both Sri Lankan Port Authority and Ministry of Petroleum Development.

The well-known cricketer, Arjuna Ranatunga and 1996 Cricket World Cup winning captain is today the Minister of Ministry of Ports and Shipping and Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development.

Nishantha Ranatunga was the former Secretary of the Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) who is a major contributor in creating the success story of Sri Lankan cricket history.

Parliamentarian Prasanna Ranatunga is one of Ruwan Ranatunga’s elder brothers who represented Gampaha district as the Chief Minister of Western Province for two consecutive times.

The next one of Ranatunga family is Sanjeewa Ranatunga who strives to influence the local community aiming for a better tomorrow through local media.



Ruwan Ranatunga wedded Hiromi Ranatunga on 12th of December 1996 and they are blessed with two sons; Udantha Ranatunga and Induwara Ranatunga.

Representing the Parliament

At the beginning, Ruwan Ranatunga was his father’s greatest subordinator in creating his father’s political movement but he had no intention to kick off his own political career. But later on, due to the persuasion of people of Minuwangoda district, he laid the foundation to his political life in order to fulfil the expectations of countrymen.

Ruwan Ranatunga stood for parliamentary elections in 2010 and secured the highest number of preference votes (63,512) and was elected as a Parliament Minster from Gampaha District.

He served as a Parliament Minster for a period of five years and became a very popular politician who earned love and respect of his countrymen - because of the immense service he did for the Western province and its citizens during his office term. Along with his brother Prasanna Ranatunga, Ruwan Ranatunga pioneered in initiating a countless number of community development projects, predominantly in the sectors of Education, Health, generating Self-Employment opportunities and improving rural infrastructure facilities. During the entire tenure of his office, he sacrificed every single cent of his salary as a Parliament Minster to enhance the educational opportunities and facilities for underprivileged children of Western province.
